Thanks to Tim Kirwin and The Woodland Trust Big Wood has become part of the BioBlitz survey scope. The wood is an excellent wildlife resource and offers a variety of habitats such as mature woodland with both deciduous and coniferous trees.  The structure of the wood offers excellent opportunities for nesting birds and possibly roosting bats. There is the usual associated ground flora and leaf litter within the wood but who knows what may be hiding beneath the connecting hedgerows and rides.  The invertebrate fauna could be well represented here and no doubt the mini-beast forays will be targeting the large brash piles and rotting logs. Big Wood has no shortage of water features too; wet ditches line the entrance to the wood with ponds and running water within the site. These features will be of particular interest to the aquatic invertebrate surveyor and bryophyte hunters.
